Seven traders sustained injuries after gunmen opened fire on a vehicle conveying them from a market along the Bukuru Expressway in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The incident occurred around 4:30pm on Sunday, October 4, 2026, around Bukuru community, as the traders were returning from Kara Market in Bukuru.
The Plateau State Police Command confirmed the attack on Monday, saying the victims had been taken to the Military Clinic at Rukuba Barracks, Jos, for treatment.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Alfred Alabo, disclosed this in a statement issued in Jos.
According to Alabo, preliminary investigations showed that the gunmen specifically targeted the vehicle conveying the traders.
“The Plateau State Police Command has received with deep concern the report of a shooting incident that occurred on 4th October, 2026, at about 04:30pm along Bukuru Expressway, Jos South LGA,” the statement read.
The police spokesman said investigators had traced seven injured victims to the Military Clinic, where they were receiving medical attention.
“Preliminary investigation indicates that the vehicle targeted was conveying traders returning from Kara Market, Bukuru, Jos. Seven injured victims have so far been traced to the Military Clinic, Rukuba Barracks, Jos, where they are receiving medical attention,” the statement added.
Following the attack, the Commissioner of Police in Plateau State, CP Ayodeji Faniyan, ordered the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Department of Investigations to take over the case.
The police boss also directed the investigative team to identify and arrest those behind the shooting and ensure that they faced prosecution.
Condemning the attack, the command described the incident as “dastardly” and wished the injured victims a speedy recovery.
The police also deployed tactical and anti-robbery teams to the area as part of efforts to prevent further attacks.
“Meanwhile, Tactical Teams and Anti-robbery Teams have been mobilised to beef up security around the general area while intelligence has been stepped up to identify and arrest the perpetrators,” the command said.
The police urged residents to remain vigilant and continue with their lawful activities, while encouraging them to report suspicious movements or activities to security authorities.
