TikTok has denied restricting access to its platform in parts of Northern Nigeria, saying the reported disruption did not originate from the social media company.
The company’s Head of Communications for Sub-Saharan Africa, Keagile Makgoba, disclosed this in a statement on Monday amid reports that users in the region were struggling to access the platform.
Makgoba said TikTok was engaging relevant stakeholders to address the reported access difficulties.
“We can confirm that this restriction was not implemented by TikTok,” she said.
She added that the company remained committed to ensuring its communities could access the platform.
TikTok’s response follows weeks of complaints from users in Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi and Sokoto states, where some reported that they could only access the service through virtual private networks.
The reported difficulties have raised concerns among affected users, some of whom have had to rely on VPNs to bypass the access challenges.
