INEC warns against fake governorship candidates’ list in six states

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has warned Nigerians against a fake online publication claiming to contain a special announcement on governorship candidates in six states.

The commission identified the affected states as Zamfara, Gombe, Delta, Plateau, Yobe and Kano in a public notice issued on Monday and shared on its official social media platforms.

INEC described the publication as fraudulent, stressing that it did not originate from the commission.

“The Commission wishes to categorically inform the general public that the publication is FAKE and did not originate from INEC,” the statement read.

The electoral body urged Nigerians to disregard the publication and refrain from sharing it, advising the public to verify electoral information through its official notices, press releases and verified communication channels.

INEC also dismissed claims that it had issued a special announcement concerning governorship candidates in the six states, describing such information as false.

The commission urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and verify election-related updates before sharing them to prevent the spread of misinformation.

It listed its official website as inecnigeria.org, its X and Instagram handles as @inecnigeria, its Facebook page as INEC Nigeria and its news portal as inecnews.com.

For enquiries and further clarification, INEC provided its call centre number as 0700-2255-4632, short code 4632, telephone numbers 090844444333 and 09050858629, and email address iccc@inec.gov.ng.

The commission reaffirmed its commitment to providing accurate information and urged Nigerians to rely solely on its official communication channels for updates on electoral matters.

The warning comes two days after INEC published its final lists of candidates for the February 6, 2027 governorship elections, amid reports that some candidates were missing from the documents.

Newspadi reported on Saturday that the Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship candidates in Ogun and Gombe states, Ladi Adebutu and Isa Pantami, respectively, did not appear on the published lists.

The documents did not indicate the reasons for the reported omissions.
