A United States freelance journalist, Shelly Kittleson, has been abducted in Baghdad, sparking fresh concerns over journalist safety despite improved security conditions in the country.
The incident, which occurred on Tuesday evening, has drawn attention from both Iraqi and US authorities, with early investigations pointing to possible involvement of an Iran-backed militia group.
The news platform Al-Monitor, where Kittleson has contributed, first reported the abduction, stating that she was taken near a hotel in the heart of the Iraqi capital.
According to Newspadi findings, Iraq’s Interior Ministry confirmed that security operatives swiftly launched a pursuit of the kidnappers. The chase reportedly led to one of the suspects’ vehicles overturning, resulting in the arrest of a suspect, while efforts continue to track down others involved.
Further updates from US officials revealed that the detained suspect has links to Kataib Hezbollah, a paramilitary group known to operate within Iraq. However, Iraqi authorities have yet to officially name the group, describing the perpetrators as “unknown individuals.”
A senior official at the United States Department of State confirmed that an American journalist had been kidnapped, although the name was not initially disclosed. The official added that the US government had previously issued multiple warnings to the journalist regarding credible threats to her safety.
Dylan Johnson, Assistant Secretary of State for Global Public Affairs, also acknowledged the incident, stating that US authorities were working closely with Iraqi counterparts and the FBI to secure her safe release.
Investigations further revealed that Kittleson had received repeated alerts from US officials about specific threats allegedly linked to Iran-aligned paramilitary groups. Reports indicate she had been warned that her name appeared on a list of potential targets held by elements within Kataib Hezbollah. However, sources suggest she may have initially dismissed the threat as unreliable.
An Iraqi official disclosed that authorities are treating the situation with utmost urgency, noting that operations are ongoing “at the highest level” to rescue the journalist and apprehend all those involved.
Kittleson, who is based in Rome, has built a reputation for covering conflict zones, including Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria. Her work spans multiple international publications, with a focus on security, politics, and humanitarian issues.
Security agencies, including the FBI, US National Security Council, and Iraqi counter-terrorism units, have reportedly intensified coordination efforts as the search operation continues.
While Baghdad once had a reputation for frequent kidnappings, such incidents have declined significantly in recent years due to improved security measures. However, this latest development highlights lingering risks, particularly for journalists operating in sensitive environments.
