Udinese director breaks silence on Maduka Okoye’s post-ban transformation

Udinese technical director Gokhan Inler has opened up on the remarkable turnaround of Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye, detailing how the Italian club helped him bounce back from suspension to reclaim his place as a key figure for both club and country.

Okoye started the 2025/26 season on a difficult note after serving a two-month ban linked to betting violations. The setback cast serious doubts over his future at Udinese and raised concerns about his role in the Nigerian national team. However, the Serie A side chose not to sideline the 26-year-old, instead investing time and resources into rebuilding his confidence and performance levels.

Speaking during an interview with TV12, Inler explained that the club adopted a personalised approach to support the goalkeeper’s recovery, combining mental conditioning with technical development.

According to him, the coaching crew worked closely with Okoye, focusing on improving not just his goalkeeping abilities but also his overall mindset and consistency on the pitch.

Inler emphasised that the club prioritised individual engagement with players, noting that such an approach allows coaches to understand deeper challenges and unlock a player’s full potential.

Since returning from suspension, Okoye has responded impressively. He has regained his starting spot at Udinese and recently delivered a solid performance, playing the full 90 minutes in Nigeria’s 2-1 victory over Iran in an international friendly.

The Udinese director noted that the club’s intervention extended beyond physical training. He said the programme also targeted leadership qualities and communication skills—critical attributes for a modern goalkeeper responsible for organising the defence.

Inler added that the coaching team, including the goalkeeping coach and head coach, continues to monitor Okoye’s progress weekly, stressing that consistent support and trust have played a major role in his resurgence.

He also pointed out that Okoye understands the responsibility that comes with his position and remains determined to prove himself in every match.

Despite his recent form, the goalkeeper missed Nigeria’s friendly clash against Jordan due to a minor thigh injury. Nevertheless, his resurgence comes at a crucial time for the Super Eagles, especially with competition for the number one spot still open.

With Stanley Nwabali currently without a club, Okoye appears to be in a strong position to cement his place as Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper under head coach Eric Chelle, as he continues his steady return to top form.
