PWDs in Nigeria rejoices as President Buhari signed Disability bill into l

“As #Nigeria’s #DisabilityBill becomes law, here’s a moment to acknowledge and thank the true heroes & sheroes of the struggle for this remarkable new piece of legislation”.

That was a statement shared on social media by Prof Chidi Odinkalu, a human rights activist, who pioneered the Disability bill which was ascent and signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari, on Wednesday.

It should be recalled that President Buhari, signed the new bill into law yesterday. “The Act prohibits all forms of discrimination on ground of disability and offenders would be charged to pay a fine of N1million for corporate bodies and N100, 000 for individuals or a term of six months imprisonment for violation concurrently”.

Presidential aide on National Assembly (Senate), Senator Ita Enang, said the new law provided for a five-year transitional period within which public buildings, structures or automobile are to be modified to be accessible to and usable by persons with disabilities, including those on wheelchairs.

However, following the ascension of the bill, Persons with disabilities (PWDs), in Nigeria has praised President Buhari for the signing of the bill. They also applauded Prof Odinkalu for his resilient efforts which ensured that the bill was signed.

A twitter handle, known as ‘Human Rights Radio’, a channel dedicated for human rights watch shared some pictures of PWDs in Nigeria who are rejoicing over the new bill.
